Guardians of the Altai: From a Dream to Reality
Guardians of the Altai: A Day with the Eagle Hunters
The winter wind swept across the Altai Mountains, its breath sharp and dry, carrying with it the whispers of an ancient tradition. Perched on a rocky ledge, I met a man whose eyes carried the resilience of the land — weathered lines mapping decades of endurance, pride, and the quiet dignity of his people.
He is a Kazakh eagle hunter, part of a centuries-old lineage that calls western Mongolia home. Wrapped in a coat of thick fur, he sits with his golden eagle — a bird of both beauty and power — its piercing gaze as sharp as the talons curled around his gloved hand. The bond between them is wordless yet unshakable, forged through years of trust, training, and survival in one of the harshest environments on Earth.
In the stillness, I could hear the eagle’s feathers shift with the wind, see the sunlight dance across the hunter’s fur-lined hat, and feel the timeless rhythm of a life tied to the seasons. This is more than hunting — it is heritage, a living archive of skill and spirit passed from father to son, generation after generation.
Here, high above the valley, the hunter watches the horizon as his eagle tilts its head toward the mountains. Two beings, united not by dominance, but by mutual respect. And as the cold bit into my skin, I realized — this was not just a portrait. It was a window into a way of life that, like the wind, has shaped and been shaped by the land for hundreds of years.
This Camera Changed How I See the World – 2 Months with the Hasselblad X2D
After using everything from DSLRs to mirrorless systems for both commercial and travel work, I decided to take the Hasselblad X2D out for a real-world test — not in a studio, not in a flat-lay setup, but out in the wild: street scenes, early light, handheld work.
In a quiet corner of the city, time is still kept by hands that have witnessed nearly a century.
Perhaps the oldest watch repairman in Malaysia.
A fading craft, in a world that no longer waits.
Many have photographed him before—but today, it was my turn.
And in that quiet moment, I witnessed time held not just in gears,
but in patience, purpose, and the stillness of his hands.
